Cerda Ancestry

Overview

Little is known about the Cerda line of this family.  I have found it rather challenging to research much Mexican heritage using only the internet.  In Mexican culture it is common for the wife to keep her surname, while adding on her husband's name.  Then, the couple's children are the same as the mother (ie - As seen below: "So-and-so Cerda Martinez").  What has confused me, is that when the children become adults, they usually drop one or the other parent's surname, BUT, not all children from the same family continue on as adults with the same surname.  So, you may have "Micaela Cerda," for example, sister of "Pablo Martinez."  This makes it very difficult to keep up with members of the same family.  For this reason, along with the fact that the Mexican government did not start requiring nation-wide censuses until 1930, it is sometimes hard to track families.  Most of the records were kept by the church, and I have not had the opportunity to visit these churches in person to see what I can find out.  If you have any information on this Cerda family, please do not hesitate to contact me.
